The one thing that we know is that education alone will not actually deliver behavior change. So if you look at anything pre 2009, seven or nine in emergency medicine, anything that was published as an intervention was essentially a primary palliative care intervention. Does just communication education, has that been shown to work?

I can name probably 10 organizations across the United States where you can get education on being an end-of-life doula and they’re all slightly different. In fact, I worked for senior care options payer-provider in Massachusetts, where I am coupled end-of-life care from hospice back in 2009.

Working with Abe Brody at NYU to do a randomized control trial of an intervention for education, for psychotropic use in end stage dementia patients. They’re really excellent, and if I have any complaint about them at all, it’s that they could have been issued in 2008, 2009. I’ll give you a perfect example.

Many years ago for the first study; I believe it was in 2009, 2010; I met with Susan Mitchell at the Institute for Aging Research, and told her that I wanted to study the use of feeding tubes for people with advanced dementia. It’s way more complex than an educational program. My question is, why this study, and why now?
