I asked emergency medicine clinicians what they thought when a patient who is seriously ill and DNR comes to the ED, and some responded, (paraphrasing), what are they doing here? Most emergency providers wanted to do the right thing for seriously ill patients, but they didnt have the knowledge, skills, or experience to do it.

I’m very proud of the work that we do every day and we take care of patients and families no matter where they live or who they are to help them meet their end of life goals. I am passionately against bad care and there is a lot of bad hospice care that preys on highly vulnerable patients and is unnecessary. Eric: Great.

Whenever I take care of a patient, I see myself as a family practice doctor, but I’ve been a hospitalist, I’ve been a primary care doctor, and I’ve done palliative. But in the end, I see these as my patients and I’m trying to define what is the right model. I wonder, is this only for patients in hospice?

Many years ago for the first study; I believe it was in 2009, 2010; I met with Susan Mitchell at the Institute for Aging Research, and told her that I wanted to study the use of feeding tubes for people with advanced dementia. That’s a problem in our healthcare financing system. My question is, why this study, and why now?
