The insight started when Carmen, an orthopedic surgeon-researcher, and Katie, a physical therapist- researcher participated in ride-alongs with EMS providers to patient’s homes. And yet, after assisting the older adult to their feet, the EMS providers would leave. So Carmen and Katie developed an EMS Community Partnership program.

Most emergency providers wanted to do the right thing for seriously ill patients, but they didnt have the knowledge, skills, or experience to do it. I think that study was really important, especially I think the message that I give people is you can do something as simple as calling a consultation and improve quality of life months later.

And we found out in our work that something like 70 or 80% of patients with dementia who have surgery come from the community, who are coming from home. That provision was taken out of Obamacare back in 2007, 2008. And that these serious illness conversations ought to involve more palliative care consultations, I think.
