Raj: It was indeed very, very gradual, and the seeds were sown when I was a medical student. The reasons are tied to the basically poor healthcare in low and middle income countries.

I have felt as I’ve come through this field over the last, I guess 2003 is when I realized I wanted to be a palliative care doctor. The second is an idea that Michael and Balfour Mount were really, I think, instrumental in articulating, which is this idea that healing is possible through the course of serious illness.
